technojunkie.org System Status
December 2003
12/10/2003: Now on a new hosting provider. Lower cost (free, actually), so it's
a better deal all around :-)
June 2003
6/12/2003: I doubt you'll see any updates here for quite a while. The site's
been running flawlessly for the past year on the hosting providers. I couldn't
be happier with the way the site has been run.
June 2002
6/21/2002: newertech.technojunkie.org has been decommissioned and removed from
DNS. Anybody that manages to make it to that page will be redirected to
www.newertech.com. I hope NewerTech does well, because I really want one of
their new Pismo G4 upgrades.
6/13/2002: The move is pretty much complete. newertech.technojunkie.org will
be retired on 21 June, and I'll be discontinuing service with my other hosting
provider. This new one offers almost all the features I had at the other
provider, but at half the cost. Yep, I'm a cheap bastard.
6/11/2002: technojunkie.org is being moved over to a new hosting provider.
Please bear with me as we get everything moved over. Sorry if stuff is broken.
April 2002
4/6/2002: Oh the horror! Zeus is a Windows box now! What have I done?!
Seriously, though, I did want a Windows box, even if I'm hardly ever going to
use it. Currently, it's pulling duty as a backup box for some friends whose
Windows box died. Freaking Windoze.
March 2002
3/5/2002: Zeus pretty much died last night. He was a good server, but his CPU
fan stopped a few days ago. And, when I finally figured out why it was so
flaky, it was too late. Now, with a working CPU fan, it'll boot, and it'll do
some stuff, but it's not 100% there. I'm going to go see if I can pick up
another CPU tonight, just so I can copy files off of it. I've already purchased
a stand-alone switch/cable modem router. It works fine. And, I've put in an
order for a 3.5" Firewire case, so that I can reuse the 80GB hard drive in Zeus.
Too bad, Zeus was a damn good server. Hopefully I'll find something for it to
do, perhaps as a (blech) Windows box.
December 2001
2/12/2001: Finally back online with the cable modem, but there are a couple of
issues that I think I might have to deal with. First, AT&T is throttling
downloads to 1.5Mbps, which isn't bad, but is about half of what I'm used to.
Second, I had to set up DHCP on my Linux box at home to get it back online. I'm
not sure if it's going to keep that IP when it comes time to renew. Time will
tell...
1/12/2001: No cable modem, now. I'm typing this from my girlfriend's iBook,
which is sitting behind a MacOS box running NAT. I'd use my Linux box to
do the NAT, but unfortunately it doesn't have an analog modem. Gawd, 56k
modems suck.
November 2001
30/11/2001: technojunjkie.org has been on the new provider for almost 4 months,
and I'm pleased with the progress. Although the price for it is a little
expensive, it's a solid fast connection to the net. So, for all of you people
accessing the NewerTech mirror, enjoy the fast downloads!
Man, what a few months it's been. Planes flying into buildings, war, and now
@Home is about to pull the plug on my (and millions of other users') connection
to the Net here at home.
Grrrrrreat....
August 2001
8/8/2001: technojunkie.org has been moved to the new hosting company. It's
a decent setup, with plenty of bandwidth on a good Internet link. I'm still
still in the process of moving data over to it, and that's going well.
5/8/2001: Well, if you're reading this, then you're getting it off of cable
modem (for now). I've dumped the DSL due to poor response from Qwest and have
switched the local network here over to cable modem. It's MUCH faster, for
downloads, but slower for uploads. And, because I'm in violation of the terms
of service for my provider, I've got to find a new provider. I'd like a
provider that can do either reasonable colocation or hosting with 5 ftp/e-mail
accounts, two or more virtual server support, and at least 1GB transfer/month.
If you know of any good hosting/colo companies, please e-mail me.
July 2001
27/7/2001: I've been troubleshooting and working with both my ISP and Qwest
to resolve a slowness issue with the DSL for technojunkie.org right now. At
this time, I'm getting HORRIBLE packet loss, dropped DSL connections, and
general slowness for incoming connections. A download that should be running at
65K/sec has since dropped down to about 5-10K/sec, making things slow and
unresponsive.
I've tested all I can at this point, and I finally have a trouble ticket open
with Qwest so that we can work on resolving this problem. More info once I
have it.
June 2001
9/6/2001: CBOS upgrade on Cisco 675 today. Downtime was inevitable and, as
always, something went wrong, which lengthened downtime. All's well now.
May 2001
29/5/2001: Picture of the new Zeus is up. Take a look down in this page.
29/5/2001: Zeus has been moved into its new case. Picture will be up soon.
It's able to take much deeper, better breaths now :-)
29/5/2001: Zeus is going down before 4pm PDT today to be put into a bigger case
which will give it a chance to breathe a little more freely.
16/5/2001: Yawn. It's been a long day. I just bought a Blue & White G3 tower
and I've been in the process of getting it set up. I stole 128MB of RAM out of
Zeus and put it in the G3. So, Zeus is now down to 256MB of RAM, and doesn't
seem to be complaining. So, there you go. Good times for all.
April 2001
27/4/2001: More network changes, now an IP change on the external interface. All's
going well, and DNS has been updated. There shouldn't be too much interruption.
26/4/2001: Major network changes today. Installed add'l 256MB of RAM in Zeus,
in addition to another NIC. Now Zeus is acting as the NAT/Firewall box here.
Bandwidth Analysis page now password protected, unfortunately. There's just
too much information to give away right now, so I had to do that. Right now,
all systems are nominal and functioning.
19/4/2001: DSL briefly down after some Qwest maintenance. We'd lost dialtone on
the phone line, although DSL still worked. Qwest reported that a wire was
broken and it needed to be replaced. Everything is back to normal now.
6/4/2001: Recompiled kernel to add NFS support for two Mac OS X boxes. netatalk
under linux when used with OS X is a wee bit flaky right now.
2/4/2001: Installed ProFTPd 1.2.2rc1; Compiled and installed kernel 2.2.19
last night. Rebooted Zeus.
March 2001 - No news.
February 2001
28/2/2001: Earthquake in Seattle today (that's a rarity) that bumped power a bit
here. Zeus rebooted as a result. 6.8 magnitude. I was asleep at the time, and
it woke me up out of a sound sleep.
24/2/2001: Installed a new hard drive in Zeus. This adds 31GB of storage. 1GB
is in /usr and the other 30 is in /home. Installed a new fan, as well.
21/2/2001: Switch got bumped, lost power, and I had to reboot Zeus. Oh well.
Eventually I'll get past a week's worth of uptime on it ;-)
16/2/2001: Zeus had to be shut down at about 1:45am last night. Seattle got
the worst snowstorm it's had in 5 years and my part of Seattle lost electricity.
The UPS kicked in like it should, getting me out of bed to come shut down the
stuff before it lost backup battery altogether. Whee, snow!!!
13/2/2001: I did recompile the ethernet driver for Zeus last week to fix the
dropped link problem. I did that last week. I know you care so much...
6/2/2001: Zeus rebooted. Lost link on hub. I'm going to eventually recompile
the ethernet driver, but for now it's up and working.
3/2/2001: BernieC.com has been deactivated. Farewell and thanks for the 3 years
. It was fun, but it's time to move on. Vive la technojunkie.org!
January 2001
29/1/2001: Rebooted Zeus. I had to. The PowerBook is in for service and Zeus,
via console, is my temporary e-mail machine. I had to reboot it to get the
monitor to work. I also updated Apache to version 1.3.17 today.
26/1/2001: Network outage tonight. Doing an upgrade of the DSL router's OS.
All's well now.
20/1/2001: Zeus rebooted yesterday. Network went down temporarily and Zeus
didn't come back up afterwards.
4/1/2001: Rebooted Zeus. I was going to try to compile/install Linux 2.4, but
I've decided against it. I'll wait until there's a distribution that ships
with it and then upgrade Zeus to that.
December 2000
28/12/2000: Rebooted Zeus. Again, the switch was bumped, lost power, and Zeus
didn't come back online after power was restored. BUT! I found a fix for the
ethernet problem. Turns out I had to change something with the tulip driver
to fix the problem (increase rx_copyback to 2000 and re-compile), but it worked.
I'm a little miffed that this fix isn't yet in the main driver source, but at
least this fix works.
16/12/2000: Rebooted Zeus. Noisy fan. It might need replacing, and if it gets
noisy again, I'll replace it.
15/12/2000: This week I updated Linux kernel to 2.2.18 and switched ISP to oz.net.
DNS updated with new IP information. Nasty windstorm last night. I heard the
UPS kick in only a couple times during a few light flickers here in the apartment.
Zeus was rebooted yesterday due to loss of network connectivity on the switch. It
doesn't like to come back online once it's lost a link, and thus requires a
reboot (ugh).
Back home...
